My husband went two weeks ago for a physical, and we just got his results back. They are pretty incredible, considering the back story. In summary, he spent ten plus years on Lipitor while eating an omni diet. Eventually he developed hypertension and was prescribed Diovan as well. He made "smarter" eating choices as recommended by his doctor like lean meats and egg whites, all the while unable to keep his cholesterol under 300. He was deemed high risk for heart disease and had to go in for physicals every 6 months.
Fast forward to now, almost 3.5 years since husband and I going vegan. He's been able to stop taking all of his medications (under supervision of his doctor, of course). He no longer has hypertension. He is no longer obese, having lost 60 pounds without trying, and is now working on losing a few more. His cholesterol results? 165. This was the first time he was able to go a full year before coming back in for a physical versus the 6 month deal. Last year it was at 200 something, but his doctor didn't deem him high risk any longer. Said doctor also swears he doesn't see results like this without medical intervention. His B-12, Vit D and iron levels are also good, since we supplement (and eat nooch, a lot).
I am so so happy he has his health back. I know there have been stories of late questioning the health aspects of veganism and I just wanted to add our story to the positive side of things. Add yours here as well if you have one! And I need to thank Isa, Terry, and all the other awesome cookbook authors out there that make veganism easier and more enjoyable for us. Yay!

That's great!
I'm not surprised that going vegan can have these kinds of effects, but it's great!

That's the kind of story I love hearing, I'm so glad he's back in good health! I hope this happens with my boyfriend, he sounds like your husband "before". I just have to work on the vegetable thing.

Awesome! My dad is obese and on Lipitor too, I think he may also have high blood pressure. Mum has started taking a steak out of the freezer every night and telling him he can cook it himself because he always complains that there's no meat (the rest of my family has gone veg too). I wish he'd take more responsibility for his health and even try veganism to lower his cholesterol. He watched the Cove with me recently and seemed moved by that (he was all singing the flipper song) so I do think there is some hope he'll stop making meat jokes.

Thanks guy! He has surprised me. I never thought he'd go completely vegan, and he's actually enjoying veggies he swore he'd never eat before (like cucumber??).
Veglicious, your dad sounds like my dad also-he love his steak. Awesome that the rest of your family went veg also!

that is great! Someone in my family is starting down the same path and I squeal a little inside when she asks for more recipes and ideas. She's getting sick of all the meds shoved her way instead of docs looking at her lifestyle. I guess it's easier to write a prescription and send a person on their merry way?

That is so fantastic! Congratulations to you and your husband!
My mom wasn't to the point of such threatening issues, but her cholesterol and weight have gone down and stayed down since she's been eating vegan.

That's awesome news!! My Dad just told me today on the phone that his doctor said he'd be dead in a couple years if he didn't start taking insulin. I told him how his life could be saved if he cut out meat from his diet, but that's not motivation for his staunch omni diet - he'd rather risk his life and take insulin. Yay for your hubby, that's great!!

Yay for your hubby, that's great!! I just read that taking insulin earlier with type 2's is better in the long term, gives the pancreas a bit of a break. But I know how flipping scary lows can be. Hope he changes his mind about his lifestyle!
