So in a last-minute schedule switch I've been asked to join my students on the school's trip to Rome this year. We're going to be there for a week. I've never been to Rome and while I wouldn't call "with 45 teenagers" my ideal trip, I'm really excited to visit and looking forward to spending time with my students there.

However, I'm a little worried about the food. My colleagues put me in charge of planning the food/drink/pricing aspect of the trip. We have a few vegetarians joining us on the trip and I'm sure there will be options for them wherever we go, but I'm worried about finding vegan or veganizeable food in places.

Those of you that have visited Rome, any ideas? We'll be hitting a lot of touristy spots, so places near those are welcome. Maybe if I'm starving I can sneak away for a bite while the kids are exploring. I've bookmarked some health food shops and a gelato place from Happycow. Hoping I can go there!

Unfortunately our hostel doesn't have a shared kitchen.

Thanks guys ;)

Avoid pasta in restaurants; a lot of them make it fresh and it will have eggs. Pretty much everywhere will have a pizza margherita (or cheesy pizza with veggies). Ask for that (or a cheeseless veggie pizza) and say NO parmesan, and you should be fine. Salads are everywhere, often with vinaigrette. Foccacia just has olive oil, and is great. You can buy it plain, or maybe even with olives or basil. The vegetarians can get it made like a mini pizza. Fruit gelato are almost always vegan (but check)......Pretty much, it'll be carb city, but you'll survive!

If you want sentences in Italian about what it means to be vegan, or whatever, let me know. I speak Italian. (Or maybe VegEric will jump in with a link to those vegan-cards-in-every-language...!)

Quick googling returned these:

http://www.veganhome.it/ristoranti-loca ... azio/roma/
http://www.greenme.it/mangiare/vegetari ... ani-a-roma

Chrome should be able to translate to English for you. If you need help, let me know.

I think it will be easy. Look for tavole calde restaurants for delicious grilled vegetables and such. Focaccia is called pizza bianca in Rome, if I remember correctly. There will be loads of toppings that don't include cheese, ie cherry tomato and olive, potato, zucchini, etc.

re: pizza bianca.. really? I've seen those with cheese, too - but maybe those were the germanized versions. I would ask in any case!

When I went to Venice last year, I was surprised how happy cafes and restaurants were for business, offering to cook something up fresh, to dietary requirements, from ingredients that seem far superior/more tasty than in the UK!. Hopefully Rome will be similar in that regard!

Look out for pizza marinara, which is just a pizza base with tomato, garlic, olive oil and oregano; delicious!
