According to documents filed in August of 2012 in San Francisco superior court by Joe, he claims to be the sole founder and owner VegNews, asserting that Colleen is just an employee. A cross-complaint filed by Colleen on Feb 7, 2013, alleges this isn’t true, and that she and Joe are now — and have always been — equal partners in the business. In fact, she says the first time she ever heard Joe’s claim to sole ownership was when she reviewed the complaint that he filed against her.

...

According to Colleen’s declaration, Joe either removed her access and/or changed the passwords on VegNews’ on-line banking system, the back-end server, and their internal financial system. She also alleges he changed the locks to the location of the company’s business records. Further, she claims he removed her name from VegNews’ first bank account, which they opened together in 2000.

"In August 2000, Joe and I opened VegNews’ first bank account at Santa Cruz Community Credit Union. The account was opened in both of our names. Joe and I have always had equal access to it and have used it for VegNews business. I verified the checking account balance on December 27 2012 which was $59,204. On January 31 2013, I was informed by a representative of Santa Cruz Community Credit Union that on January 25 2013, Joe had my name removed from our account. I also verified that he had emptied the funds of the account so that the balance in the checking account on January 31 was only $31.49."

...

On January 22, 2013, Joe informed Colleen that he had instructed the office cleaning people to not clean her office until she starts separating her trash from her recyclables. The letter ends with “If and when you decide to become a team player, they will gladly resume cleaning your office.”

Joe is asking for full ownership of VegNews, and $4.5 million dollars for breach of contract and fraud, while Colleen is asking for injunctive relief and for “an independent third party to take control of the accounts payable, receivables, payroll, draws, and all other financial and operational decisions that Joe and I cannot agree upon.”

Wow. That is an impressive amount of drama. I'm worried about what this means for the future of the magazine - anyone gazing into a crystal ball out there?

If there's any justice in the world, Colleen will prevail legally.

you know it's bad when they're basically paraphrasing a Mountain Goats song.

Yikes! My subscription is up and I don't feel right renewing until this is settled. Joe really comes off as the party in the wrong here.

:( This is sad. I have been subscribing to the magazine for years so I do hope it will survive. I read the documents linked in the article and it certainly seems like Colleen is right.

Yeesh. Joe sounds like kind of a douche. He's only looking to benefit himself. This is bad for VegNews and bad for veganism. If they disappear, veganism loses a lot of it's reach. And FFS, it's like the only vegan magazine left!

What a mess! Let's hope they find their way back to a compassionate resolution that will save the magazine. It looks like Colleen is putting the best interest of the magazine first.

Wow. First the meat pictures, now this. Bummer.

Although I'm way more upset about ones of the comments - Lula's might close because of divorce. NOOOOOoOooooOOOOooo!!!

The Lulas thing is so sad. Blythe is amazing and she shouldn't have to lose her dream because she is getting a divorce.

If Lula's closes before I visit in June I will freak the hell out.

Their website hasn't been updated since February, and their last tweet about their rotating flavors (they used to tweet daily) was 2/28.

It sucks. I remember going there when they had just opened and they seemed so happy, and Blythe told us the story about her niece and her dream to start the ice-cream parlor and it seemed like they were on the cusp of having their dreams come true. I will miss them if they close, but have faith that Blythe will open another place if need be and continue making her awesome icecream.

They posted new flavors on Facebook yesterday, so they're still open for now!

Colleen won a preliminary injunction against Joe to prevent him from blocking her from accessing company property/documents/whatever. The judge said she was clearly co-owner.

So...but he apparently still has access to their FB because amongst all the great posts about food and vegan interest things are photos of him hugging various women. I hope that stops soon.

So the managing editor, senior editor and online editor all quit this week. Kinda sucks that it went down like that. RIP VegNews. Even if they keep going.
