What's the best sit-down restaurant for vegan-friendly Indian food in Manhattan? I'm specifically looking for dosas. I know the dosa cart near NYU, but am hoping for a restaurant where a group can gather.

If not dosas, what's your favourite NYC Indian food in general?

For no-frills midtown lunch, I go to Minar for dosas, or Swagat for non-dosas (they sometimes have tofu dishes there). For dosas with friends I usually go to Dosa Delight in Jackson Heights, Queens. If I were seeking out dosas in Manhattan, I'd go to Chennai Gardens, or the dosa cart. For vegan-friendly Indian food in general, first I think about how much I miss Yogi's Kitchen, then it's Chennai Gardens, Madras Mahal, Tiffin Wallah, or Vatan, all of which are good about identifying the vegan dishes.

Avoid the East Village places, they mostly suck. The restaurants in the Indian neighborhood around 28th and Lex are much better.

The one place I haven't gone for Dosas that I want to try is the Ganesh Temple Canteen out in Flushing.

My vote's for Vatan. Great food and a fun atmosphere.

oooh the Ganesh Temple Canteen is wonderful - or wait, I'm thinking of the dosa place directly across the street from there. Super yum!
I love Tiffin Wallah most I think, followed by Chennai Gardens. That's for both dosas as well as regular Indian and they do mark the dairy dishes.

Timely thread! I'm visiting in June, and we'll go anywhere for good Indian.

Not traditionally indian but how about Hampton Chutney? It is very casual, no wait service (order at the counter), which allows for lounging without pressure to vacate your table. Many dosas can be made vegan and they often have vegan soups as well.
