I had a subscription for years. Only non-boy-focused teen mag, it was thebest thing ever. Then they got bought out and started sucking and then they were gone

Found a tumblr with scans! I remember most of these issues!!

Yes. Although I was really all about Jane.

Yes. I thought I was too cool for it. But it was too cool for me.

I love Sassy, was quoted in Jane...My grandma got me a sub to Sassy and it was so cool, it talked about vegetarianism and real sex issues...

My college bf was obsessed with Sassy. I bought him a subscription for his birthday and he was over the moon thrilled not to have to shamefacedly skulk up to the bookstore counter with his issue.

Jane was my fave as well, but both were excellent. I so wish there was a box of these at my mom's house - I'm totally jealous, lycophyte!

Ah! I loved Sassy until they got bought. Too good. I really liked Eat This and I always felt more like I was reading letters from an imaginary cooler big sister just handing out friendly advice and talking about books and music sometimes instead of being told to lose weight, fix my skin, flirt with boys, stop wearing so much black, wear only black, &c.

i lived for sassy. i started reading it when i was about 13 and everything was formative and hugely important, so there was some major imprinting (like, i think i'm still trying to dress like a sassy model, and i insist that chloë sevigny is good even when i know she's bad). i think i've mentioned it on the boards before, but i have all of my back issues (1992 to 1995, i think, or whenever they got taken over) in my living room bookshelf.

This! Except Chloe Sevigny IS good :P

I am so jealous that you have all the back issues. I had 1990-1993 and my former stepmother threw them out. :(

I loved "It Happened To Me", and "Put it On" and I always wanted to be the Sassiest Girl in America. Actually, I AM. Yup.

I loved Sassy and Jane! I totally forgot about those. They for sure made me feel way cooler than those insecure-boy-crazy-girls-who-needed-to-be-told-how-to-get-pretty-so-they-read-Seventeen girls, ha.

I always thought they had the prettiest models, and I seem to remember them being a lot more diverse than seventeen at the time. Is that right?

I also totally loved the one makeup tutorial, I can't remember which issue it was, but it was like "Is your makeup super stylized, like Betty Boop or Olive Oyl? Or are you more like a groovy witchy earth chick? A rock and roller? And I can't remember the fourth?" I remember thinking, sweet, I can think about makeup like this for sure. I don't know, it made it seem like fun and a role I could put on - and not like something that would make me acceptable, like I should be hiding x or accentuating y.

If they reprinted all the issues in a bound copy (I guess it would have to be copies?) I would faint. I don't have any of mine!

I'd so buy a book of old Sassy's! But you guys all have good memories! The only thing really specific I remember about Sassy is that they liked to diss Jewel and call her a coffeehouse poseur or something to that effect. I also remember its overall "look," if that makes any sense. But mostly I remember the Jewel bashing.

The bashing I remember from Sassy is Natalie Merchant and Milla Jovovitch. LOL.

jewel wasn't a thing until, like, 1995 or 1996, right? i'm pretty sure i had stopped reading the magazine by then (but i'd probably have been on board with the bashing).

Hi guys!

I'm currently undergoing writing a dissertation all about teen magazine and their influences, and i'm looking into alternative teen mags like Sassy, who took a different approach to the common, boy obsessed make up driven teenage girl. So i was wondering if any of you would like to comment on dishow Sassy magazine influenced you growing into adulthood? Do you think it was a positive media outlet for teenage girls at the time? What made it so great? Any other comments to Sassy magazine and its influences to its readers would be amazing.

Only comment if you're comfortable with your views helping towards my dissertation, your quotes may be involved within my final work but you will have full confidentiality and will not be passing your details from this forum onto anyone else.

Please help if you can! Thanks guys.

Georgia Mumby - University of Westminster student in need of your help :)

I got a subscription to Sassy literally two issues before they got bought out and turned into another "what boys really want!" mag. I was so bitterly disappointed.
