Tell me about your favorites! I'm trying to eat a big salad for lunch every day, and I want to mix up the flavors so I don't get bored.

Well all my salads pretty much have spinach, (or other dark leafy greens) cucumber, tomato, peppers, carrots in them. It's sort of my base.

I'll take that and add chickpeas. Or add cranberries and slivered almonds. Or sun dried tomatoes and tangerine. Or black beans and avocado.

I don't really use salad dressing, usually some raspberry vinaigrette, but very little, cause that's one of the few dairy free ones at the deli. With black beans and avocado, or with any fruit, I don't feel like the salad benefits from dressing.

I love yogurt based dressings. I'm helping to test recipes for a vegan kick-start program, and last week I got to test an awesome grilled apple and zucchini salad with a dressing consisting of 4 T soy yogurt, 1 T lime juice, 1/4 t lime zest, 1 t coriander powder and 1 t agave syrup. I thought it was a weird combination at first, but the taste was great. If you leave out the agave, you could even get away with using a slightly sweetened yogurt. I bet this dressing would be very nice on any type of green salad. The tester salad had walnut pieces sprinkled on top, which was a great addition too.

Green Goddess Dressing from AFR
lemon juice and olive oil with mediterranean spices/herbs (esp. za'atar or cumin) and raw or roasted garlic
straight-up classic vinaigrette with olive oil, red wine vinegar (3:1 ratio is classic, I like a little more vinegar), salt-smushed garlic, pepper, whole grain mustard

For premade, I tried annie's shiitake dressing and its really good, depending on the salad of course.
I like the sanctuary and green goddess dressings from AFR.
For quick, whip 'em up dressings I like crushed garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, oregano or dill, vinegar and miso-tahini dressings. A lot of times I will just use plain olive or plain walnut oil, again depending on the salad. It sounds strange to some, but like Alaina, I sometimes just want to let the stuff in the salad shine through.

I'm in love with the Follow Your Heart vegan dressings. Ranch, caesar, thousand island, sesame.

I love using salsa as dressing on salads with compatible things (black beans, avocado, etc).

The tomato one in Vegan Diner is different and tasty, especially with spinach.

I do one with Maggi seasoning, vinegar, oil and tons of fresh herbs (and sometimes soy cream if I have any) that I love. I could eat like ten pounds of salad if it had that dressing on it.

Dreena Burton has a million frikking awesome healthy salad dressing, from creamy, to smoky, to sweet, to .. just everything. And many healthy ones that include legumes, tahini, nuts. Most are pretty easy - immersion blender and go. It's amazing how dressing can make salad taste so damn good (and the fat helps you absorb the nutrients from the greens)

My current fav is an Orange Tahini Ginger dressing which I love. I have posted an approximate recipe below.

For one serving:
juice of 2-3 tangerines or clementines
about a tsp of tahini or more
a splash of vinegar
finely grated ginger (like 1/8-1/4 tsp)
splash of soy sauce/tamari

Mix all together. Good on greens, grains, you name it.
delish!

Thanks for all the ideas! I normally just do a boring vinaigrette, but it gets dull after a while. Chopped herbs make it much more interesting, but I don't always have fresh herbs.

The other day I made one with fresh thyme, orange juice, and balsamic. It was kind of weird, but good!

It's weird, I always used to hate dressing... But I like almost every one out of AFR. (Not the scallion one.) The Cesar Chavez is my all-time favorite and has led me to try lots of other (inferior!) Caesars.

As for bottled dressing, I find the goddess dressing or whatever from TJs very tolerable!

My current house dressings are:

No-oil Balsamic http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipe/ ... c-dressing
Ameyfm's flaxseed http://veganeatsandtreats.blogspot.ae/2 ... ssing.html

I bought everything for the AfR Green Goddess based on everyone's recommendations, excited to try it!

V'con maple mustard dressing is the best thing in the world. I could probably eat it every day. It's extra nice on bitter greens cause the sweetness of the maple balances them out. I also love the v'con miso tahini dressing. It tastes sort of cheesy to me.

I wouldn't call it my favorite, but I must like it a lot because I make it the most--but the Simple Lemon Dressing from Get it Ripe I make all the time. Julie Hasson's basic vinaigrette from Vegan Diner is really good and super quick too. And the house dressing from Get It Ripe pretty good too. I really love all homemade salad dressings. So much better than bottled!

shiitake yeah it is. That whole salad is perfect. I wish I could make it more often but grapeseed oil here is pretty pricey and it's just not the same with olive oil.

I agree with the statement that pretty much any dressing from AFR is a winner, but I recently made a Cashew Ranch Dressing that is to die for from Grills Gone Vegan. It's sooo good and easy! I also like to use the Red Hot Tahini from the PPK as a salad dressing, but sometimes I skimp on the "Red Hot" part because I don't always want my salads spicy.

My favorite is a tahini one - tahini, water, lemon juice, garlic & onion powders, agave, and salt diluted with water.

My two other favorites are the balsamic and the sanctuary dressings from AFR. I'm really starting to like dressings that don't use oil as a base because they stay emulsified much better! Also don't make my lips greasy :)

I also love the AFR dressings, especially the Cesar Chavez (I add the pulsed almonds to it, like the Cesar recipe in Vcon) and the peanut lime dressing, which I've found also makes a good sauce for a bowl/stir fry. These two dressings alone were worth the price of the book- I haven't bought a bottle of commercial salad dressing or stir fry sauce in quite some time! When I need a dressing fast (like if I'm packing lunch in the morning) I mix tahini, miso, and water (I think that's from Vcon); it's simple but so good and you don't need a blender. Also good for bowls or topping sandwiches.

Along the same lines - what's the best ranch recipe out there? I'm trying to get our local vegan-friendly lunch place to make me some vegan ranch for their wraps.

My favourite is a really simple one: mustard, white wine vinegar, olive oil, pinch of salt, black pepper, pinch of cayenne, a little sugar.

The Sanctuary Dressing from AFR is the best ranch I've ever had. It relies on silken tofu and vegenaise though; maybe if they're vegan friendly your lunch place wouldn't mind investing in these items?

I think I'm going to try that balsamic for lunches this week. Sounds good! Amey's sounds awesome too.

I love miso-tahini dressing so much. Not with white miso though, it has to be a stronger one, like red or brown. It's just tahini + miso + water + vinegar. I eat that with a spoon.
