I think it's fine. They make cool decorations, and it's nice to appreciate the beauty of nature. My aunt has a big old wasp nest on a stick hanging from her ceiling. It's one of the coolest decorations i've seen.

I can't bring myself to pick up anything like feathers, shells etc., and yet I don't actually see harm in them as long as they're discarded naturally, and have no use for other animals. But some part of me still goes 'ewww, not vegan!' when I see a pretty shell and think about picking it up! ???

would you consider fossils like Orthoceras vegan? i really love the look about Orthoceras but don't know how I feel about fossils.

I would. I think with most fossils the tissue has been replaced with minerals anyway so it's not like a body, it's rock. Plus they're millions of years old. Like with feathers or shells I feel like if I decorate with them guests might not know they were found items and didn't come from a plucked bird or purposely dessicated sea animals (like sea stars, sand dollars, shells, etc). You don't have that problem with fossils.

The only problem I have with decorating with fossils is when people carve out areas of natural beauty to bring a chunk of rock home with them, ruining the site (like gouging chunks out of a rock face or removing pieces from the petrified forest in AZ). But if it's like a rock found on the beach, no biggie.

Can we talk about how much I want something made of mastadon ivory? Because it's forking MASTADON, how awesome is that? Mammoth ivory is cool but not as cool. Are there problems I'm not thinking of? Is it glamorizing ivory in general? I don't know.

I just noticed this topic ...

We have a little glass cabinet in the corner of the dining room ... inside there are bones, dried mosses, shells ... just things we picked up when walking. There is even the skull of a sheep ... I do not feel badly about them being there, they are there to acknowledge they were once alive & died in the open.

I collect feathers and make them into cat toys.

I'm definitely in the camp of found shells and feathers and antlers being fine. Those animals aren't using them anymore, and (apart from bones, maybe) they weren't killed by humans. I have lots of shells in my house. I generally don't pick up feathers because my mom brainwashed me when I was a kid to think that all birds have lice, and I live in a place where having deer antlers around signifies that you're a hunter, but I wouldn't think that they weren't vegan if they were collected. Buying them new is a different matter. I have seen some lovely hair accessories on Etsy, though, made from found antlers and bones (the descriptions specify that the objects are found) and I've waffled about buying them. For some reason, it's ok for me to find them...but buying them from someone else who found them squicks me out? For no real reason, really.

do you think spider webs could be an ethical issue in jewelery making?

Not really.

How do you gather them, and what do you do with them?

You mean like...she keeps the spiders in glass and they make webs and then she uses them for art? Or she takes webs that spiders have made and then puts them behind glass somehow? Or she makes webs herself out of material similar to what spiders use but no actual spiders are involved? How does this work exactly?

Oh I see! So she waits till they've abandoned the web. That's cool, that sounds the same as using abandoned shells. :)

I had never imagined spider webs could be gathered and used in jewellery. When MMC asked I thought she must mean pictures of webs, or webs made of silver wire, so I was confused as to why that would be a problem.
The examples linked to are so pretty! I'm not quite sure how you could tell if a web was abandoned, but if they were and someone isn't farming the spiders or disrupting their habit to gather them I think it should be ok.

I did not end up buying any web jewelry or art...But it is interesting. There are different types of webs spiders make and we often see around the house is really different from what is used in jewelry.
