Oh, I was just reading something really interesting on that question T... Lemme try and think about where I read it and I'll post it if I can. I think the gist of the theory I was reading was that children are into animals in large part because adults emphasize them-- much more universally than, say, firetrucks. (That then begs the question... Why do adults point them out so much?)

Go Sven! Ball is a popular word here too, definitely in M's most consistent set.

this is a really interesting interview, and includes some thoughts on children's (and indeed adults') interest in animals:

I really enjoyed listening to it.

Amey! That's what I was talking about! I didn't read it at all (which was why I couldn't place the source), I heard it from you.

Charlotte had her first dr appt today and it went really well.
i was unsure about my choice of using my own PCP as her dr (she has a "family practice" rather than specifically pediatrics) but after our visit i feel so great. i always liked her for me but i wasnt sure how she was with babies but she was so in love with Charlotte and went on and on about how amazing babies are.

Charlotte's weigh in today was 5 lbs 2 oz which is what she was Sunday night upon discharge from the hospital so the doc said that was great because she prolly lost a little more in between Sunday and today and is now starting to gain it back.
she never once laid any maternal guilt crepe on me about her being so tiny.
she said she was absolutely perfect, just small.

she's still a tiny bit jaundiced but she didnt seem concerned. especially when we reported she has become a super prolific pooper in the past 12-14 hours. like serious amounts of poop just squirting out of her.

we went from 1 MAYBE 2 poop diapers in a day to 9.
POOP EVERYWHERE!

we go back in another week for another weigh in and check up. she has a very slight heart murmur that i guess may just go away.

so the Punklet is doing great. mom is a hot mess but we're working on that! :-P

Oh yay! It sounds like Charlotte is doing great and obviously she's feeding sufficiently if she's making so many poops!

Oh yay, she's growin!! And that many poops means for sure she's getting what she needs and the jaundice will be out like nothing was even there in the first place, very soon...

aww, clapping Giles sounds the best!!

And I always love the flashback pictures of chubby baby Emperor and the beautiful Magician!

Poor Eli, how did he cope with the emergence of those first teeth? I'm really not looking forward to that experience!!

Sounds like your appointment went really well, LisaPunk - great to hear BabyPunk is doing so well. It's amazing how quickly your life changes to being thrilled with having more poop to clean because it means they're eating well!

____

Westiebaby is four months old today [whoa!] and she decided to celebrate early by rolling from her back to her tummy a bunch of times last night [she'd already done the tummy to back, which definitely seemed easier]. Uh oh, baby on the move!

Aw yay LP! I'm glad Charlotte's doing well and hope you are too.

FWIW, heart murmurs are pretty common in newborns. M had one and it had totally disappeared by his 1 month check which I guess is what usually happens.

Thanks for the link Amey and C&S!

Yes, L had a heart murmur and it disappeared by 6 months. As long as its gone before the first year check up, it doesn't seem to present an issue.

I had totally forgotten until now that Sven had a heart murmur at first too! By the 6 month checkup it was gone.

I had a heart murmur that I didn't grow out of, but it's still totally benign and doesn't affect my life or increase the risk of anything (according to my doctor after I had an ultrasound recently of my heart to finally check out the source of the murmur). Even if it doesn't go away, it's not necessarily something to worry about.

Yes, my mother was born with a slight heart murmur, which she still has 74 years later - it's never caused her any problems at all.

we started rice cereal for the reflux. i am kind of anti-rice cereal for babies, but man, it seems to be making a huge difference. and holy cow does she ever love it. she lunges for the spoon and gobbles it down, but turns up her nose at banana, avocado and applesauce. so we're just sticking with plain rice cereal for now. she went from spitting up vast quantities multiple times a day to maybe a little bit once a day. i can wear her on my back now, without her puking all over me!

we started the cereal at about 5months and one week.

Yep they are... but on this topic, this totally reminded me that I have to make Samuel's appt for his heart murmur echo asap! (he's 4.5 now and they heard it about 2 months ago during his well visit... I've been slacking on phone calls as you can see... but one thing at a time i guess... he's had his blood tests done at least)

Oh and I have one too. But I know when to limit my activity...

I've been trying many different things, even oat cereal. He wont take anything! :p I'm gonna try again in a week or two though...

We still have many spitups. I am so tired of clothes changes (him AND me) and the fact he cant keep much down and doesn't gain weight as much as he should.

Ada turned two on Tuesday! She's now 3 ft and 32 lbs. This kid just amazes me every day. She's known her upper and lower case letters for quite awhile but now she likes spelling out words and can even recognize a few. She's really into a phonics and learn to read app on the iPad. And books. We've always read piles of books while she eats and now it's really cool to hear her say what's on the page before we get a chance to read it. And she is just talking so much. Physically she's super active and is climbing up all sorts of ladders and nets by herself at the playground. She wants to help with everything and is just really sweet. I know I say this about every age, but this is seriously the most fun and cutest age yet!

Here are some pictures from her birthday:

Ada is a real pipperoo! Happy birthday to her!

And teeth for Eli, wow! We were at the dentist last week and she said there's no sign of any imminent tooth action for tw, even though she's his PPK-age-twin. I hope he feels better soon!
