No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to comprehend this Thanksgiving tradition. Does saving one turkey really make the omnis feel better about killing millions of them?

No, I don't think they feel better, I think they just think its sort of cute and funny that they aren't eating that one.

UGH.

The pardoning is the omnis making a funny from their side of the norm, except...you know.. it's not really funny when you don't eat meat.

I think it's easier to make a joke about things you feel guilty about than it is to own up to it and change. And I think that goes for everything, not just veganism. It's just pretty sad that it's so widely embraced when it comes to animals and meat eating, though.

The thing that really gets me about "turkey pardoning" is that "pardoning" implies that the turkey did something to deserve being slaughtered. I feel like it actually makes the whole situation worse for turkeys in general -- it makes turkey eaters feel like they are even more "justified" in eating turkeys, it makes turkey slaughterers look like the good guys, and it ultimately just further entrenches the disgusting animal sacrifice ritual as a cultural norm.

Barf.

it seems to obvious a subject to rant about. i was glad when i saw a peta rep on the news and they very calmly stated that everyone could pardon their very own turkey (which isn't exactly true of course, but whatever)

That's exactly what I don't get, though! How can you pardon a turkey? The turkey didn't do anything wrong! You have to do something wrong to get pardoned. You can rescue a turkey, you can save a turkey, you can not eat a turkey...but you can only pardon someone who has done something wrong.

At least they're not sending the poor thing to Disney World this time.

There's a great book out by the woman who runs United Poultry Concerns called More than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality. It has a chapter about the Presidential pardoning ceremony and tons of info about turkeys and Thanksgiving. I really recommend it.

Yup, for the past couple years at least. For a while they were sent to a park in Virginia, but conditions there were bad and some animal rights groups complained. Then they started sending the birds to Disney World, which obviously is not a place that knows a lot about turkeys! The birds were dying withing a year. There was a petition this year to get the turkeys sent to Farm Sanctuary where they could get the best possible care but I read they sent them to Mount Vernon instead.

Oh jeez that is the stupidest idea, send the pardoned turkeys to Disney? Man alive, politicians do dumb things.

Jeez, you would think they would send the turkey to a farm sanctuary in the first place?

Instead of turkey pardoning, it should be called turkey rescue, but that would make the meat eaters guilty.

God forbid if we did that.......

When I saw the news clip about it on Thanksgiving I got really mad. Obama was saying how there was this competition with 24 turkeys and the best one won. Kind of like dancing with the stars...hahaha.

only you know, in dancing with the stars, the losers don't get killed and eaten.

What bothers me the most about this is that it doesn't actually reduce the number of turkeys being slaughtered and eaten. If the president is going to "pardon" a turkey, shouldn't it be the turkey the First Family was going to eat? So they save that turkey and don't just sub in a different one?
