Last year I bought a handmade crocheted cotton tablecloth in Budapest. I had just been bequeathed my beloved Aunt's dining room set and I had planned on that cloth to grace that table for years and be an heirloom. It now has what appear to be cat peas stains on them (although the cats aren't allowed in the dining room, and the table itself shows no signs of "water damage" so the stains are really a mystery). They are almost perfect circles and they are all over the cloth. I soaked it in vinegar/water solution and that did not work; I want to be gentle with it and don't want to use bleach. I am at a loss of how to clean it. google searches didn't really help
Any ideas PPK?

Do the stains smell like cat peas?

Soak it in a light soda crystal solution overnight, or baking soda if you're being really cautious.

Do you have any idea of what it's made of?

Is it machine washable? I only ask because I crochet, and the crocheted kitchen items I've made like placemats have washed up really well. It depends very much on the yarn used, of course, and I understand your hesitancy to throw a beautiful handmade tablecloth into your washer.

If it's pure cotton you can wash it hot. Put it in a pot on the stove with some detergent and simmer it. Put it in a towel and press out the water, then stretch it gently and dry flat. Then starch and iron it.
