If its any consolation, many Clevelanders had figured they were trafficked away, never to be heard from again, but the family's of the 2 youngest didn't give up the search. I think the amazing thing is that that WASN'T what happened and they were actually found.

OMG. I just read that Michelle Knight (one of the women rescued from the house in Cleveland) was raped by two boys at school prior to her abduction. Sometimes I forget how common sexual abuse is, and then I find out again and I'm horrified. I can't even believe that people can do such things.

The part that gets me is that they can apparently find people willing to do it.

I watched too many women strip on Howard Stern to be judged and critiqued by Howard Stern to be surprised, but still disgusted.

I guess you have to know where to look.

At the 1,700-bed Stockholm Center for Eating Disorders [in Sweden], the largest clinic of its kind in the country, [modeling] agents have been known to stand outside the clinic and approach teenage patients, offering the sometimes horrifically ill girls work as models because of their small size. These instances provide a shocking look into how shallow the modeling world is capable of being, caring only about young women's physical attributes and not their health..

1,700 beds in an eating disorder facility? That is mind-blowing.

Maybe I should enter! I have some pics in the 'you shouldn't be in pictures' thread that could definitely win me the prize.

Oh, you SHOULD! I'd vote for you! Especially if you entered that epic drunken karaoke one or the roller rink one! I think you'd get the entire PPK voting for you! It would be a landslide.

I find being a powerful woman to me means being indpendent, looking good, being a voice for feminism/veganism, and choosing to intimately invlove myself with whoever I damn well please. People (like my mother! Who is more conservative...) somehow think that this means that I'm a hors d'oeuvre who doesn't give a fork about society.
The other night I chose to tell my mom about my recent hook up in light of my newfound singleness and she told me she was having a hard time judging me. It made me really sad.

So often when my daughter plays with little boys, the boy's mother will say "OMG LOOK HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND!!!!" Really do we have to sexualize what is basically 2 toddlers playing together? I can't figure out a non-snarky response (I am always tempted to say "Oh no, we're raising her as a lesbian.") but I would like to point out that their genders are irrelevant at this point, without seeming rude.

Also, nearby town has a Pirates and Fairies festival. There is a clear gender divide in the promos. (hint the boys aren't fairies)

As you know... my girls are older. This never seems to end. Both girls get comments like that from family when they see pictures of the girls with boys. Which makes me crazy. Because almost all of the family knows that at least one of the girls is a lesbian. Why would she have a boyfriend? Good grief.

When it happened when they were very small, my standard response was always "He seems to have a friend who is a girl, but I doubt she thinks he is her boyfriend"

Sometimes the best response is to act like you don't understand what they're talking about. I'd be like, "what? why do you say that?" or "huh? who is his girlfriend? my kid? oh, that never would've occurred to me since they're just babies." Of course, I know what I'm doing, but sometimes acting clueless and making someone explain themselves to you is a good non-snarky way to point out how dumb a comment is.

I would have gone as a pirate. fork the fairy shiitake. I was also Han Solo and Chewbacca for different years during Halloween. I was Leia too, but mostly because I had long hair that could braid into the style.

My cousin posted that on facebook and also just a second ago posted something like "You can't shake a hors d'oeuvre tree and expect a housewife to fall out".

Which is kinda amazing to me because we had to defend the shiitake out of her when she worked at hooters, slept around a lot and had kids out of wedlock. Why would she turn around and act like she waited til marriage?
