I'm in the minority here- I hated this episode! I found it devastatingly dull.

What was that shizzle, anyway? That was crazy!

I loved Peggy in this episode.

And holy crepe, has Sally ever turned into a mini January Jones. Her mannerisms are identical to Betty's.

Loved this episode. So twisted. I agree that there were parts where I was wondering what was real (Grandma Ida, the hippy in Don's office).

So my takeaway is that Amy is the mother and lover figure all wrapped up into one for Don, and the reason he pines for oatmeal and Sylvia is the mole on the right side of their faces (the model on the oatmeal art mockup that is)?
I just watched this last night and so am still reconciling 50 Shades Don with Coughing Child Don.

amee also drew a mole on the right side of her face just before she jumped his bones.

Right - hence his madonna/hors d'oeuvre issues with both Sylvia and the oatmeal mom. I was wondering from where the mommy issues were coming from, because nothing stuck out in my mind, but this answers that. (Unless i'm forgetting a flashback from a previous season, which is entirely possible.) It took me a moment to see the oatmeal mom's mole and in the last scene with Sylvia in the elevator, the right side of her face was kind of covered in shadow so that almost went right over my head too.

I didn't notice the headscarf too. Once it clicked that oatmeal mom was Amee I noticed they looked somewhat similar overall though.
Who would have thought that don's big mind-blowing, it all makes sense now drug was a vitamin b shot, ha. Its early yet but I wonder how they are going to wrap up the series next season. They seem, to me anyway, to really be ramping up the insight into don. The mystery around him is crumbling....

it also explains why peggy and ginsburg couldn't find the art. cause they were looking for soup. :-)

I'm really impressed by the analysis in this thread! That all really went over my head. I was stuck on Kenny's dancing I suppose.

This piece in Slate is an interesting reading of the episode; after a second viewing it's even more persuasive.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/05/20/mad_men_season_6_episode_8_the_crash_is_scdp_fighting_its_vietnam.html

And this is probably my favorite blog that covers Mad Men; it's worth going back and reading the earlier posts.

Many of the contributors were involved in this really great book (which was among my partner's birthday gifts).

I thought Wendy was an illusion/drug vision at first.

I figured that cherry picker and ad lady were on some Don brain thing from the get go. I think it is interesting Don came from this sexual type background and how it relates to him relating with women now. The creepy spying on his latest side project gave me the creeps.

Grandma dropping by sent off a red flag...Then she was looking for Don's gold watch - I was like call the cops! I thought she came in through the front door not the back though?

I kind of liked this ep - it was all over the place in a good way (last week was bo-ring!) - but the Don flashback scenes lack the subtlety and power of the ones from earlier seasons. It all just seems a bit obvious and heavy-handed.

OTOH, I liked that they FINALLY put up a billboard stating that Don cheats because he learned to associate romantic interests with a crisis.

or that he lived in a brothel in his formative years? that could have something to do with it.

That would be where the crisis element of being with women for Don is coming from.

oh, i thought you were talking about being beaten because of having had sex with one of the prostitutes. (we've known for a while that he grew up in a brothel.)
