Howdy y'all! I need some ideas for food to make for my birthday bash! All of the things I have thought of are pretty obvious generic things that any 'ol BBQ would have

Potato Salad
Corn (to grill)
Hot Dogs for the bonfire
Potato Chips and Chip Dip
Mushroom Kabobs

So here's the deal. I'm poor and also a lazy forker! (Well, okay, I'm not actually that lazy but if there's going to be any food that requires some TLC, it's going to have to be the kind of TLC that can be done the day before. I learned my lesson last year that if I have to actually 'do' anything during my party, I'm pretty much going to be just 'doing' all night and never socializing. So I want everything to be either able to be prepped the day before for self-serve, or DIY-style like the hotdogs for the bonfire.

But I do so like it when I see all you's folks' fancy hyper-themed foods. Any ideas for how I can make the food feel extra themed and/or campy? The party's going to have a 'photo-booth' with a phallic cactus desert/sunset backdrop and some hay bales for sittin'. Just in case you need help getting a feel for it.

Also, what if I made a cake-type thing for myself and iced a phallic cactus on it? Would that be cute? But cake isn't too western feeling. Isn't pie more appropriate? All my pies have been fails, though. So what kind of cake flavor could I do to make it themed appropriately? If you want to know the truth I wish I could have a Dairy Queen ice cream cake. I used to have those as a kid every year for my birthday. Is there a way to make one of those vegan and also be someone who generally doesn't have great success with baking?

My first thought was "Dolly Parton wig."

A poke cake might be nice? Like a vegan version of this: http://www.thecountrycook.net/2012/06/banana-pudding-poke-cake.html?m=1

Well I'm too poor to buy a wig, but! Something Dolly-themed is a great idea. Maybe a life-size cutout of her...

A cobbler might be nice, too! http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-easy-foolproof-cobbler-54973

Not sure about the DQ cakes. I know a place here that does vegan ice cream cakes, but I think it'd melt before it got to you.

Well, 'round these parts the two most traditional southern cakes are coconut cake (made with fresh coconut) and caramel cake. After those would be red velvet cake, and butter cake with chocolate icing.

That's all I have to offer. CAKE.

My grandma used to always do a caramel icing. She is now HUGE on coconut poke cakes. She just pours coconut milk into the cake and covers it with Cool Whip and then shredded coconut.

ETA: I would LOVE to be able to help with this and attend. I'd even sing 'Fancy'.

OMG, now I want poke cake! I'm pretty sure Dreena Burton has an ice cream cake recipe in one of her books, and it's just cake with store-bought ice cream layered on top. But here's a recipe for ice cream cake (I just googled so can't vouch for it).

You could make Texas caviar.

The chocolate pie recipe in VPITS is so easy I can make it!

beans & weenies - you already have the hot dogs. you can buy a few cans of veg baked beans to go with it...you can do something that seems fancy but actually is pretty easy, like infused vegan butter spread for the corn, or smothering the corn with EB and then adding chili powder before roasting...

Serve everything you can in jars. And cast-iron skillets. And cheap old camping kit from thrift stores. And out of tin cans. And on cutting boards. And maybe on other random bits of wood you find about, if they seem like they probably won't be too toxic. Garnish and decorate things with hay?

Stuffed baked potato skins = tasty and super rustic. Seitan city chicken would feel appropro, despite the name—eating meaty things off of sticks is pretty cowperson-like.

Mason jars were definitely in my head but I loooove the idea of camping/tin stuff!

So my brain totally glossed over the 'western' part of the idea, which means you probably don't want southern food.

Well that would be fine really. But yeah it's more of a cowboy bent. But Loretta Lynn will definitely be on the playlist.

I can't find one on YouTube that hasn't been pulled. Boy George + Dolly:

How about smores? Or a smore pie/cake concoction?

Well, all you really need is beans.

how has CHILLI barely been mentioned? (I know, I always seem to mention chlli in these types of threads. You guys probably think I only eat chilli)

Vegan chilli is awesome, cheap, and easy to make. Omnis are cool with vegan or vegetarian chilli. And you can serve it in fun ways!

Chilli and cornbread. Or a couple of chilli pies with cornbread topping. Or FRITO PIE. Super easy and cheap and there are a ton of recipes online if you don't feel like winging it.

How about a bunch of build-your-own bars?

Chili bar, baked potato bar, and brownie/cookie/sundae bar....with watermelon....and beans and weenies served in tin cans.

All pretty cheap, low prep, fun....

Chili and beans to me sound very un-fun to eat at this kind of party. Anything you'd need a spoon for I wouldn't subject people to, really. It's not a dinner party, it's a big stand/sit around/dance party. There won't be tables to eat on, and there'll probably be quite a good handful of people there. But yeah, chili is delicious. :)

Great ideas! I think carrot cake has a western feel. And the icing is good and easy to do a tofutti cream cheeze type thick one.

Here are some ideas:

http://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-oldwestrecipes.html

Some stuff, like the fry bread has eggs, if it isn't super easy to make vegan i'd just use a vegan recipe and follow the technique.
