Yay for Alice and Elijah and good ped visits.

We learned in school that the forward fontanelle often doesn't close until 18 mos- 2 years, along with the mastoid ones if babies have them. The back one usually closes pretty fast, ime. When we got babies into childcare at 2 months, they very often didn't have that back of the head soft spot any more.

Oh and just for ref, here is a pic of Eli's legs... You can totally see where his toes curve in (it is also turned inward at the ankle)
I hate that it could take FOREVER to get an appt to get a check up on that... They better call me back soon *crossing fingers*

Image
Dont mind the out of focus bad pic, it was a quick snap :p

stuckunderhere, do you think they might do the whole "watchful waiting" thing with Eli? I mean, Beet's legs looked like this:

Spoiler: show
ImageImage

And we were told to just wait and see if they grew out (they did, in under 2 years, before he turned 4) because the doctors said things like shoe inserts and braces didn't work. They said kids normally outgrew that sort of thing (congenital bendy leg stuff), so it was like taping a 2p to an outie belly button and thinking that's why it went flat after a few months when it would have gone flat anyway, and that if it didn't self-correct after a few years, he'd get surgery.

I'm not trying to start any shiitake here or anything, just curious. Beet's leg-thing was a huge, horrible deal for us. It felt like everyone was against us, totally unsympathetic, and treated us like shiitake (relatives included, not just medical people) except the endocrinologist, geneticist, and the (totally hawt) orthopaedic surgeon.

its not positional (in utero) though... its structural (hereditary) because DH had it BADDD as a baby... surgery, casts and all. So it will never correct itself for my kiddos. He will need the booties and bar. Boo!

Oh, poo. I didn't even think about that. I hope he doesn't need surgery and that the bar doesn't bother him.

If we would have had doc appointments before Eli was over 7 months old, I think we would have already been out of the booties by now. He is getting older, and wants to walk and be all over now... so it's gonna be tough. Boo! He will be at least 10months old before our specialist appt so yeah... *crossing fingers*

lydia learned to clap today! she is so hilarious, just keeps doing it over and over for anyone who will watch. also, perfected getting into seated position from lying down, lying down from seat, downward dog yoga moves, and scooting backwards on her bum. her army crawl is pretty damn fast too.

I hate waiting for appointments. We got fast-tracked with Beetroot for some of them (my friend said she couldn't even *get* an appointment with the paediatrician, let alone one that fast) because they were convinced he was dying of calcium-deficient rickets and veganism, but once that was canned, it started taking ages to get appointments again.

Yeah, they pretty much went on a total vegan witch hunt. I was even told to stop breastfeeding Beetroot and to "switch him to something more appropriate." (He wouldn't specify what, though, and sent us to a dietitian.) Thank goodness the dietitian wasn't as much of a croissant as the paediatrician and Health Visitor (the HV who wrote a huge long letter to the paediatritian, saying she was so concerned about Beet's poor diet and lack of calcium, etc.). The paediatrician was SO mean to us when we saw him that afterward, I had to run and hide in the hospital bathroom to cry -- I cried so hard, I peed my pants!

Haha, wow!! *shakes head* Some people are just f**ktards... My pedi didnt even flinch when I said we were vegans, on Thursday. She just asked what Eli was eating and to make sure he had iron and a B12 supp once BFing goes down. I really like her! (new to me... we lost our other pedi due to her health issue so this was just the 2nd time with the new one)

I was going to wait till Malka's second birthday to do an update, but I just spent over a week with her 24/7 on vacation and there is so much to say about where she is now. She is almost 23 months. She is such a joyful, hugely energetic, ball of wonder and mischief.

Her vocabulary is just enormous at this point and she learns like 5 new words a day and applies them immediately to sentences. She has a lot of past tense verbs and she's just made the (seemingly backward, but apparently important) jump from appropriately using irregular past tense (I did it!) to trying to create regular grammatical past tense (I do-ed it!). I heard her do that the first time a couple days ago and almost fell over with glee. She is using many more Hebrew words. We spent one day of our vacation visiting my husband's cousin who's a nurse at a Hebrew-speaking Jewish camp and she happily hung in with the big kids (teenagers) for several activities and seemed to understand a lot of the directions being given by the counselors in Hebrew. That was pretty exciting, since at this point almost nobody has spoken Hebrew to her except for me. She sometimes says please or thank you.

She can now climb basically anything, including the big kid ladders at the playground, open practically any container (scary), open most doors, put on her own shoes and socks, get out of clothes without assistance, and more.

She is slightly less likely to laugh when she injures us and slightly more likely to kiss where she hurt us and rub it. She really loves the idea of kissing ouchies and will often invent them to get a kiss in a funny place (Have ouchy on my tushy! Have ouchy on my elbow!). She is showing so much empathy these days. We met a kid who said he had hurt his knee (at camp the other day, and who our cousin identified as a chronic malingerer) and Malka wanted to follow him around asking about his knee, giving it kisses, inspecting his ice pack, trying to find the exact location of the ouchie. Today, two days later, she's still talking about the kid. She is doing so much parenting of her baby doll. The other day she was holding the doll on her lap and "reading" it a book and using its own hands to point things out on the page and telling it what they were. She often tells me "Booba pooped! Booba need change diaper!"

She is developing a crazy memory. She tells stories about things that happened weeks ago. She is still talking about the 4th of July fireworks. She knows what kind of food we get at every single restaurant we go to (drove by Panera today and she yelled "SOUP!!!!"). We have never, ever sung her the Twinkle Twinkle version of the ABCs, but someone must have, because out of the blue a few days ago she started singing the whole damn thing.

She still eats almost nothing. That continues to be a total pain in the asparagus. We're still trying to act blase and indifferent to the whole thing. Yesterday she ate cucumber and asked for more and I almost passed out from the shock. I am definitely putting her on an iron supplement ASAP because I am really worried that she is borderline anemic from her terrible diet and that that is further suppressing her appetite. Over our vacation she decided to start obsessively eating ice and I almost had a stroke thinking it was pica, which I'm sure it's not, but why risk it?

And the best news of all. She let me brush her teeth without complaint tonight! I let her brush mine first (which I've tried a hundred times without success) and then she actually let me brush hers!!!!

That's so cool, Ariann!
I'm thinking for school this year, we can all learn a language together. It's amazing how kids retain that kind of thing -- I was teaching myself a little Russian last year and after months of not saying anything, I said, "You understand Russian," to Raygold, who immediately answered, "Not very well," in Russian. I was impressed he still remembered any.

wow Ariann sounds like Malka is really rockin out with the language skills! that's awesome!

BabyPunk turned 3 months the other day. she is still super wee. she's about 9 and a half pound which puts her somewhere at the bottom of the growth charts. but she is gaining appropriately so no one seems all that worried about it. she still nurses every 1.5 to 2 hours during the day but gives me a 4-6 hour break at night which rocks.

she doesnt nap.....like ever but i can now put her in the pack n play and turn on her mobile and she is entertained for 10-15 minutes so maybe i can eat!

she really still only makes one sound when she is "talking" to us. she goes "ahooh? ah-oooh?" it's cute we talk back and forth. though right now she is practicing an occasional shriek at her mobile. i think she is testing her vocal cords ;-)

she can hold her head up pretty good and if we lay her up on her tummy on the couch she can do pushups but not on her playmat on the floor. that just makes her mad.

she seemed like she wanted to roll from front to side/back recently then i read they usually go back to front first but maybe shes just practicing.

we went to the cardiologist this morning and she is still doing really well. her VSD that was once moderately large with a 50% chance of needing open heart surgery before her 1st birthday is now a small VSD and they said it is unlikely we will have to do anything about it. YAY!
she still has rapid breathing so she stays on her meds for now.

she's pretty much a little rock star that goes with me everywhere i go and unless she's hungry she just chills out and watches the world go by and takes it all in.

she's a pain in the butt to get to sleep at night but i think it falls within the typical infant dont wanna sleep range.

she finally outgrew most of her newborn clothes! woo!

Vax doesn't like to fall asleep at night, either -- lately I've fallen asleep trying to get him to sleep or I wake up and am still holding my boob near his mouth. Once he's asleep, though, he'll usually stay asleep until I have to get out of bed to pee (I've been drinking a lot of water since I nurse so much and try to err on the side of drinking too much water rather than too little), which is usually 3-4 hours later (when my husband goes to bed). No matter how carefully I creep out of bed, it's like he has a 6th sense and if I'm not right there, he wakes right up. But then he is up and I need to nurse him and I only get 1-1/2 to 2 hours of consecutive sleep out of him max form then on.

What great news LP! So happy for you and Babypunklet (of whom we need more pictures, preferably featuring guineapigs).

Good luck SuH and CC, your story sounds so awful.
