I was never a big fan of his writing - his trademark lack of descriptiveness made it so that I always felt like I was missing something in the story - but he was a cool dude and I will forever love him for giving us Justified, which I think is one of the best shows on television right now.

I love his writing! It's so slick and breezy. And the dialogue is so spare and real, but fascinating. Everything in an Elmore Leonard is so fluid. For me, he's a real pleasure to read.

I never actually read any of his books. I just saw the writers tips thing on Yahoo news this morning and clicked on it and it said he was dead. I think it even says in EL's list of writerly sins to keep description to a minimum! For me, that depends on writerly/readerly preference and I don't take as gospel or a sure-fire approach to good writing coming from any writer. Sounds like he was a stylistic minimalist, though, from what I've read.

Yeah, he was pretty bare-bones. And I agree: if everyone wrote like he did, the world would be a boring place. There is certainly room (and need) for all kinds of voices and styles. But he was so good at what he did. You really should read some of his stuff. I've read 15 or 20 of his books and only disliked one (Djibouti).

Well, I should read some of his stuff then as in general, bare bones is more my thing when it really comes down to writing styles I like. But descriptive writing in the hands of certain writers (Woolf, FSFitz, Nabokov, and too many others to name) is too awe-inspiring to be missed. I totally agree though about the need for all kinds of writers voices and styles. There's room for all of it, if you ask me! There's nothing like reading someone who's struck gold and is running with their peculiar/particular/distinctive talent, whatever that may be.
