I am so disgusted right now. I just went to scoop the litter boxes, and found them full of fruit flies! Like, a LOT of fruit flies. Ugh! I have never seen this before, have you?? So gross!

I thought I was keeping the boxes pretty tidy. I scoop them every day, and do a complete litter change & box scrub once a month. Since I'm fostering some kitties, the boxes see more traffic than usual, but I have 4 boxes for 3 cats & 2 kittens, and that seems like a good amount (I know the rule is 1 box for each cat, plus one more-- but I didn't want to buy more boxes since the kittens are temporary).

The boxes are soaking now and hopefully this will solve the problem Any more ideas of how I can keep them out?

Woah! That is so weird. Is someone not burying their poop? I can see that attracting them, since flies are all over our dogs poop during the summer.

I hope you get it sorted!

what kind of litter are you using? i've found that flies get all excited about plant-based litters. the first time i used world's best, i wound up with maggots in the box because i had just the one little cat and sometimes got lazy about scooping every day. never again! i clean it pretty much every time she uses it now.

I use a clumping clay litter. My senior cat rejects natural litters.

I've had that happen too. I figured they came in on fruit and settled in the litter. I wasn't scooping even enough and I had a lot of cats using three boxes due to space constraints

This has happened to me recently, too and has never happened before. I've always used the same litters, etc. through the years and in times before, fruit fries always hung out around the kitchen garbage and stayed there if they were anywhere in my apartment. Now they're migrating to the bathroom and the cat litter's in my place, too. Maybe it's a new fruit fly trend. Like flocking to litter boxes has become more fashionable or is the latest thing in the Fruit Flies Who's Who! The place to be and be seen!

Ditto to the veg based litters. We used to use swheat scoop until we got an infestation of pantry moths- they love that stuff. My brother recently had a fly infestation due to corn litter. No idea why they would be interested in clay litter.
