Well he opened up three of the scabs on the punctures on his belly and is oozing liquid. We washed the wounds, put on a triple abx cream and will call the vet in the am. One of the wounds is quite deep like a crater and the skin around is hot and reddened, so I am concerned its an infection despite the abx he is on. Is this normal? Anyone have experience like this?

I would check his temperature--you can stick a thermometer in his armpit areas (I guess cats don't have arms, but you know what I mean) and then add 10 degrees and that should be approximately his temperature. If it's over 103.5 he has a fever and I would be concerned.

Thanks SRock! With the weekend coming in, I am taking him to the vet tomorrow for a recheck of his wounds. He generally seems to be doing a lot better, but infections can move really fast...

Continuing to think good thoughts for Carlito's healing. He's lucky to have such a good Momma!

Poor Carlito is now back at the vet. His puncture wounds started to ooze pus, so he is in for observation until tomorrow afternoon, with them considering whether he needs to go back into surgery to clean out the wounds, if they believe its necessary. Poor little dude. He is not having a good few weeks.

Thank you so much for the continued good thoughts. Its so rough when your animal friends are sick!

His puncture wounds were getting infected, so at the vet's they were soaking him in cleaning solution every few hours and draining the pus out of them. The holes are crazy deep and so gross - but after 2 days of draining and cleaning, at least they aren't hard and red. There are 3 punctures that are problematic and we have to take him back in on Monday to see if they're healing or if we have to do surgery again. Just the last two days of cleaning was another $200, and this is the cheapest vet in our area - they specifically keep their rates very low so that they can serve a low income clientele. If he has to go under again and be treated, we will be out over $1000 in vet bills, and I feel like a jerk caring about money, but man $1,000 is a lot of money right now. Heck even the $600 and change so far is a lot.

He is home now, and we need to keep giving him abx and washing him. The nurses were telling us that they were in love with him, because he was just such a darling, which was sweet. But even so, I am totally dreading washing him.

Thanks for the good thoughts!

We have been in and out of the vet's office for the last few weeks (and we have two more appts next week), because we just need to keep the pus/inflammation from building up as his wounds heal, so we can avoid an abscess on his belly. The build up got to being just smaller than a tennis ball, on a 14lb cat (he has lost a lot of weight), and its down to being far smaller now. He is on his 3rd cycle of Clavamox and is getting 4 soaks a day in Dermachlor. Our vets were really nice and have only been charging us $50 a day for the days they keep him and soak him all day. Its still been nearly $1000, but they have cut us a lot of slack. We have tried to do most of it at home, and I am getting pretty good at it. We found a good way to pill him as well - we just give him an eyedropper of broth after putting a pill in his mouth and then he has to swallow.

He is doing better on all other metrics too - back with our other animals, eating normally, able to get around easily (we were concerned he might have a fracture at one point). He even purrs again, as we pet him.

He is definitely never going outside again though!

Oh my, what an ordeal you've all been through. I'm glad he's doing better, purring when patted is encouraging.

Sounds like your vet is being really amazing about everything. So, so happy about that. Even happier, though, that Carlito is doing better.

Carlito is now officially out of the woods and back to being his adorable (albeit half bald) self. The only lasting damage is that he used to have two vampire canines that would stick out of his mouth, in this really debonair Dracula-esque way, and now he has but one. Its a bit sad when he yawns and just has 3 fangs, but in the grand scheme, we are so lucky things weren't worse.

He is if possible even more affectionate than usual, and just wants to snuggle all day long. Today Leela went down for her nap and Carlito spooned her, kissing her loudly, until I got the camera and then he fell asleep in a position that made a cute photo impossible, Little stinker!
