Ok. So I biked in the freezing cold and I have to say, it was easy when I started out but once it got later, i just wanted to be home in my nice warm bed. I also might've run 3+ miles today, but that's beside the point of this post. I'd like to give all of you who ride in the winter to get around BIG FAT KUDOS. It could have been my frustration with traffic or the pain in my legs but fork. You guys really are bicycling badazzes.

hmm see im the exact opposite. i hate the first 15 minutes or so of my commute when its cold & dark and my bodies still cold but once I warm up its not too bad. key is knowing how many/what layers to wear in that specific weather.

I'll check it out. I put the bicycling magazine manual and some tools I don't have (chain whip, cassette lockring, rack) on my wishlist. I got a tuneup last week with a groupon and they told me that I'd want to get a new chainring, cassette and chain around spring. I want to do the work myself if I can.

I love the term 'chain whip'. The actual tool is neat too, but I the term is just great.

It is a bit cold now, 7°F/-13.9°C, so biking isn't the funniest ting now. But I'm still doing it everyday to work.

haha yah the weather is starting to get cold. how longs the commute for you? ride in the snow as well?

with wind chill it was 11F this morning and suppose to snow later with 46mph gusts. atleast heading home itll be tailwind rather than the brutal headwind this morning...

I commute about 9 km a day, and now it is a bout 7 inch of snow....

badass. i dont know if im jealous or not haha

i want to ride when it snows but it would take me too long I think. how much longer is the ride with no snow to snow? Is most the snow plowed onto the shoulder making you take the lane or do you have bikepaths/lanes that are still usable?

My winter bike still needs some work (BB overhaul, fender mounts, chain) so I put the snow tires on my regular commuter. They are kind of a tight fit for this fender but it works.

10ºF this morning. Sun is out so it should be twice as warm on the way home.

i need to get some burly tires like that and set my ss fixed for the winter.

Yeah, winter riding is how I got into fixed-gear in the first place. You can really feel with your feet whether the rear wheel is slipping. And slowing down is more reliable than rim brakes (I always have a brake though).

The tires are great; totally worth it since my route has lots of icy curves and a couple of unplowed path sections.

agreed, i use to ride fixed a few years back and switch to it every once and again and when its cold out. when the snow gets deep there do you still run those tires? move to studs? or go to something more narrow?

Kind of on topic, don't know where else to post this though. Volunteered at a charity event to put together ~150 20-26" bikes. Here's a picture of my organizations "Bike Lot" from today. Called "Bikes for Kids" this is apparently the 3rd year they've done this.

1st snowy commute home last night.

Whoa. I'm a little sad we haven't had any real snow this year. I've been hoping for an excuse to use my (new-to-me) mountain bike. I don't love riding it usually, but it will be perfect for the snowpocalypse.

I want to fix up my mountain bike this year for snowy weather, but after the bill for tune ups and fixing my bike after I hit a poorly advertised pothole at the university at high speed was so much that I can't even think about spending any more money. ._.

It doesn't snow that much here anyway... just rain. Lots and lots of rain.

I'm letting my bus pass run out this semester and riding/walking for the spring/summer semester, I'm looking forward to riding more, and the benefits of that, but I'm not really looking forward to the never ending RAIN. ._.

I rode to work today for the first time in a month. Between vacation and illness I hadn't been on a bike since the beginning of November. I was dreading the big hill by my house but my legs knew what to do and it wasn't any harder than it ever has been. It was about 20ºF when I went in and is now 11ºF when I got home. It was gorgeous. I should be getting my winter bike (trade with a guy at the local shop) this week so bring on the snow!
