any ppkers in or around montreal? anyone visiting?

I don't know if you were serious about vegan poutine, but if you ever find any, let us know asap! My bf and I go up to Montreal a couple times a year, and he's always on the lookout.

just want to chime in and say that someone should open a Montreal version of Foodswings...with poutine and all kinds of junky Canadian specialties. that would be awesome.

actually, i would LOVE to open that restaurant. as far as i can tell, the closest thing to vegan "junk" food is aux vivres smoked seitan sandwich and the tofu dogs available at la belle province and similar. they're not bad in a pinch, but god, i would eat all the time at a place that made poutine and some good greasy food.

Unfortunately, no one's come up with a vegan version of the Montreal poutine.

If I can get my hands on some decent vegan cheese, I might try to work this out for Veganmofo.

I'd love to open another vegan resto on the island of Montreal as well... but finding a serious business partner (who can help with the cooking and also manage the kitchen & biz) is difficult. A vegan diner would so rock.

We've got vegan poutine in Portland, but it's... Portland.

We've got vegan poutine in Toronto. And I can honestly say I recommend it over the one I had from Potato Champion in Portland. Come to Poutini's folks.

I miss Aux Vivres so much. Especially that damn BLT... it's delicious. (no poutine though). I think I might try and head over to montreal for expozine in a couple of weeks.

I liked Aux Vivresm but it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would--except for the smoked coconut! So delicious! That keeps me going back whenever I'm in Montreal.

i'm so forking pissed off at aux vivres right now. they're decent, but the last time i was there, the food was really sub-par. the WORST part was the carrot cake though. i've had it before, and it was quite delicious. this time, the icing tasted of nothing (really nothing.. like plain shortening) and the cake was dry and tasted like baking soda. SO SAD.

I must find poutinis!!!

You guys should try the BLT with a side of Dragon Sauce. I've talked about it on my blog once or twice. For vegan mofo, I'm working on a recipe for dragon sauce... almost got it. So close now...

A vegan diner in Mtl would be a awesome. It actually ranks second on my missing restaurant wishlist for the city:
1- An actual restaurant with a menu centered around elaborate yet non-fancy/overpriced main courses instead of sandwiches and burgers like most (including Aux Vivres which I like but only as lunch or brunch place). Perhaps La faim du monde somewhat qualifies but still, not really.
2- Vegan diner with greasy food, preferably opened late.
2-(tied) A full on fast food chain like California's The Veggie Grill (which I have yet to try but I love the format)
3- Food Trucks. I would kill for a cinnamon snail-type truck. The city needs to allow them so badly.
4- Upscale restaurant with fancy food.


As for vegan poutine, come on, it can't be done. I don't care what TO or Portland says, there is no such thing. We're light years away from having the required squeaky yet meltable vegan cheese curds that would make it possible. I used to be an expert on the dissecting what makes or breaks a poutine.

I would love to open up a Veggie Grill in Montreal!
I was thinking about trying to open up a vegan bistro but the money that it takes to do that is quite a bit!

Has anyone tried Yuan? They just re-opened and it's great.
