My parents & 7-year-old brother are newly mostly vegan, and I would love to get my bro a vegan kiddie cookbook for Christmas. Does anyone know of a book like that? Amazon suggests Kids Can Cook: Vegetarian Recipes which seems to offer vegan adaptations in any nonvegan recipe. Thoughts?

yeah, but it's not really a cookbook for a 7 year old. it's recipes that you'd make for a 7 year old.

nm, the one i saw earlier is way not vegan friendly. this might be a lot of work but what about looking through books you already have and find some easy recipes and then type them out and rewrite the directions to make them more kid friendly. i can't think of a vegan book for kids. i had a really simple baking book when i was a kid and i looooved it so much. i think it's a great idea for a present!

Mollie Katzen has a few kids cookbooks out. They're not entirely vegan, but a lot of the stuff in them is, and they're really good with presenting stuff at a level that kids can understand without being condescending.

I have had this book out from the library before and while the recipes did seem really simple, I didn't make any of them because they didn't seem especially healthy either. I remember the recipes all being pretty rich (lots of oil, EB/ butter etc) which a child would love, but it isn't the style of cooking that I am looking for so it wasn't a good match. I will say that all the recipes seemed really "normal" and easy so if they are new vegans it might be a great idea!

This is a fabulous idea, if only I had the time! A project for next year maybe, ha.

The Mollie Katzen kid books are a good idea. I will look into those.

I've never seen this myself, but I think the recipes are vegetarian, not vegan.

It's not vegan, but many of the recipes are vegan and it does have recipes for things like vegan french toast, tofu scramble, and tofu mayonnaise, and offers suggestions for subs. There's a creamy tomato soup with no dairy that's thickened with potato - looks like it doesn't do a lot of slipping in animal products where they're not needed. There are a fair number of recipes with cheese, though.

The directions look clear and simple enough for older kids, and the recipes look pretty good. Basic recipes for the most part, but includes things like dal, curries, falafel, sushi, etc. in addition to vegetarian versions of American standards. I just looked through a stack of the kid's veg cookbooks - I'm making a bookmark of cookbook recommendations for the youth dept. - and this one was my favorite.
